Antonia: Behind the myth of Marie Antoinette

Nairn Community & Arts Centre,
2 Sep – 2 Sep

Remembered for her iconic fashion, overspending and fate at the guillotine during the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette’s principal passion, opera, and her pivotal role in the progression of the art form, is often disregarded. Part-opera, part-play, Antonia explores the lesser-known events (comical, heartbreaking and scandalous) of Marie Antoinette’s life through the lens of her relationships with the composers she manoeuvered into the spotlight, and confronts how famous women are robbed of their true selves in public memory. Join Olivia Doutney as Marie Antoinette, and the musicians of Liberata Collective, a critically acclaimed company fast establishing itself as a leader in creating historically informed performances. Featuring the music of Gluck, Piccinni, Joseph Bologne, Sacchini, and others, alongside Marie Antoinette's own letters, this original creation combines Baroque Gesture and movement to explore the real woman behind the myth.
