Sarah Thomas: The Raven's Nest, An Icelandic Journey Through Light and Darkness

The Classroom Bistro,
1 Sep – 1 Sep

Join Sarah Thomas as she discusses and reads from her memoir The Raven’s Nest: An Icelandic Journey Through Light and Darkness. Set in Iceland’s otherworldly Westfjords region and written in beautifully vivid prose The Raven’s Nest is a profoundly moving meditation on place, identity and how we might live in an era of uncertainty and environmental disruption. Following a Q&A Sarah will give an extended reading inspired by the Icelandic tradition of kvöldvaka. On farms, especially in the short days of winter, somebody would read aloud to the household while they continued the necessary work of carding, spinning, knitting and darning, whittling or sketching – all sharing in the light of a single lamp. Even through times of poverty, this tradition helped give rise to the highly literate society which Iceland boasts today. The audience is warmly invited to bring making and mending projects to do as Sarah reads, or to simply be transported through the landscape, culture and language of Iceland.

Price includes tea/coffee and a scone.
