His first novel, Our Fathers, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and his second novel won the James Tait Black Memorial prize for fiction. His novel, Be Near Me, published in 2006 has been adapted very successfully for the stage in a co-production between the National Theatre of Scotland and the Donmar Warehouse in London, and spent part of 2009 touring the UK. In 2008 his new selection of Burns’s poetry was published to critical acclaim, and his eagerly awaited new novel Maf the Dog will be published in May.
