Artist Statement
“Reflections” documents several journeys from Edinburgh to Buckie and back during different seasons of the year. My aim is to observe the reciprocal and constant dialogue between nature and man. I find tension and compromise can be simultaneously witnessed during car travel. I continue to be drawn to repetition of lines and plains with the desire that my use of colour and abstraction will draw in the viewer. I am extremely proud to be part of this year’s festival and I have no doubt it will prove to be both as dynamic and meaningful as 2009.

Ruth Nicol has achieved a great deal since winning Nairn’s 2009 Open Art Competition. She has completed her degree course at Edinburgh College of Art, and travelled frequently around the North East of Scotland. Her solo exhibition is a pictorial record of her fascination with road travel and with the surrounding landscape as it changes throughout the seasons. Never shy of covering large canvases, Ruth has excelled herself with this dynamic and inspiring exhibition in the Community Centre.
